ASTM	American Society for Testing and Materials offers an outline for safety standards.

ATSSA	The American Traffic Safety Services Association, an international trade association located in Fredericksburg, VA. Since 1969, ATSSA has represented companies and individuals in the traffic control and roadway safety industry. Over 1,800 ATSSA members provide the majority of roadway safety features, services and materials used on our nation's roadways.

BSI	The BSI name has been synonymous with best practice for over a century. With its roots in the standardization of the early railway systems, civil engineering and construction, BSI has grown to become a complementary set of world-class businesses.

CEN	CEN's mission is to promote voluntary technical harmonization in Europe in conjunction with worldwide bodies and its partners in Europe. Harmonization diminishes trade barriers, promotes safety, allows interoperability of products, systems and services, and promotes common technical understanding.

CENELEC	CENELEC is the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization. It was set up in 1973 as a non-profit-making organisation under Belgian Law. It has been officially recognised as the European Standards Organisation in its field by the European Commission in Directive 83/189/EEC. Its members have been working together in the interests of European harmonisation since the late fifties, developing alongside the European Economic Community. CENELEC works with 35,000 technical experts from 19 European countries to publish standards for the European market.

CIE	INTERNATIONAL COMMISSION ON ILLUMINATION: As its name implies, the International Commission on Illumination - abbreviated as CIE from its French title Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage - is an organization devoted to international cooperation and exchange of information among its member countries on all matters relating to the science and art of lighting. The CIE is a technical, scientific and cultural, non-profit autonomous organization. It has grown out of the interests of individuals working in illumination. Since its inception more than 80 years ago, the CIE has become a professional organization and has been accepted as representing the best authority on the subject and as such is recognized by ISO as an international standardization body.

COST 331 report	Objectives: To establish an up-to-date scientific method with which, on the basis of drivers’ visual needs, the optimum pavement marking design ensuring visibility by day and night, in all weather conditions, can be determined.

DANAK	DANAK is the national accreditation body in Denmark. We are a public authority under the National Agency for Enterprise and Housing, the Ministry of Business and Industry. DANAK’s website contains general information about accreditation as well as information about the individual firms that are accredited by DANAK. Accreditation is one for the means which may be used by Danish firms in order to avoid technical rade barriers to trade in connection with exports abroad, and the EU Commission has acknowledged accreditation as a central element in the implementation of the Single Market. DANAK’s logo on test reports or certificates is documentation to the effect that the laboratory or certification body that has issued the report/certificate is accredited by DANAK. In addition, DANAK undertakes official assignments for other Danish ministries, for instance, the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Employment.

EA	EA is pledged to play a key part in eliminating technical barriers to trade by: achieving a uniform approach to accreditation throughout Europe achieving universal acceptance of accredited certificates and reports building and maintain confidence among nationally recognised accreditation systems supporting the harmonised implementation of accreditation standards opening and maintaining the interchange of technical knowledge among MLA signatories and associate members achieving traceability of measurement maintaining and developing multilateral agreements (MLAs) within EA itself and with non-member accreditation bodies or regional groups

FHWA	Finalised January 2008 for minimum reflectivity standards in the US. This new standard requires agencies to replace non-compliant signs within seven to ten years.

ISO	The source of ISO 9000 and more than 13 000 International Standards for business, government and society. A network of national standards institutes from 140 countries working in partnership with international organizations, governments, industry, business and consumer representatives. A bridge between public and private sectors.

The Danish Road Directorate	The Danish Road Directorate, Ministry of Transport, Denmark, is responsible for the administration and operation of the 1,618 km national road network. Its tasks consist of planning, construction, improvement, maintenance and operation of the network and provision of services and traffic information to all road users.
